Artist Statement

My art reflects the movement of my life.  Each piece holds the emotional expression of the day, the week, the years that led up to each unique moment of life.  My technique is guided by the sensitivity of touch and love, and both are imbued into each piece as the clay directs me toward completion.  I love creating and can't wait to see where this wonderful jouney takes me next!

As an operating room nurse supervisor for the last 17 years with a renowned plastic surgeon, Leah Rubenstein has watched science and artistry work together to create works of beauty.  Leah has always had a love for ceramic art, and has chosen clay to be her vehicle to express herself, and communicate that expression to others. ”Pottery is something I love, and I believe that the ebbs and flows of one’s life can be expressed creatively in this art. Happily, my pottery art is something that has become my passion, and it is incredibly rewarding to know that others appreciate my work”.

Having received her BSN in nursing from Alfred University, Rubenstein had concentrated heavily on ceramic studies. While at Alfred and in the years since, Rubenstein feels enormously privileged to have had as her mentor the internationally recognized master potter Val Cushing, who spent 40 years as Alfred’s professor emeritus teaching ceramics.

Rubenstein’s pottery is always functional as well as artistic.  Her style is quickly recognized by her use of slips for decorative enhancement.  Her pottery is ever changing in style.  “Once comfortable in a style, one ceases to grow”.

Rubenstein’s body of work consists of functional pieces-- from bowls, to wine coolers, cups, plates, teapots, platters, and custom commissioned pieces.
